09 March 2018
Caterpillar has been selected by Acorn Infrastructure Services Ltd. (AISL), working in connection with the Bangladesh Power Development Board, to supply 16 Cat 16CM43 generator sets for power generation in Bangladesh.
These are the second and third utility-scale heavy fuel oil (HFO) based power plants, each 103 MW purchased by AISL from Caterpillar, following the purchase of the 103 MW power plant commissioned in 2012.
Capable of generating up to 103 MW of power, the 16 Cat 16CM43 generator sets are supported with onsite supervision and engineering services provided by local Cat dealer, Bangla Cat. The Cat 16CM43 diesel engine has a bore and stroke of 430 X 610 mm with a cylinder output of 900 kW.
“Today, there are frequent power outages that affect both the corporate and private lives of the residents. The world-class reliability and durability of these generator sets will ensure of high availability of power to this region,” said Tarique Ekramul Haque, managing director with AISL. “AISL is also investing US$320 million in four additional power plants using Caterpillar Electric Power generators running on diesel oil, which are scheduled to come online in 2018 with a total generation of 400 MW.”
With these current heavy fuel engines generator sets, Caterpillar is feeding a considerable portion of the Bangladesh energy mix to support a rapid closing of the recent energy supply gap, said Ulrich Boehm, a sales manager with Caterpillar.
