Caterpillar adds first electric drive large dozer
09 September 2026
Caterpillar has introduced the D11 XE electric drive dozer, which is designed to consume up to 25% less fuel per unit of material moved and move 5% to 10% more material per hour than the next-generation Cat D11. The result is a 20% to 25% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The new model has operating weights from 238,796 to 257,958 lb. (108,316 to 117,007 kg), depending on the configuration. Its C32B engine can meet U.S. EPA Tier 2 equivalent or Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V emissions regulations. It is rated 861 hp (642 kW) in forward and up to 959 net hp (715 kW) in reverse. Forward/reverse speed is infinitely variable up to 7 mph (11.2 km/h). Available blade capacities range from 35.6 to 57.0 cu. yd. (27.2 to 43.6 cu. m.).
The primary multifunction touchscreen on the D11 XE provides a clear view of machine performance and convenient access to operating settings. Available onboard features include AutoCarry for automatic blade control during the carry segment; 3D grade control; Automated Blade Assist (ABA) to automate blade movement to key pitch positions; and automatic ripper control. The new dozer can also be equipped with Cat MineStar solutions.
The electric drivetrain has 60% fewer moving parts than a mechanical drive system, which Caterpillar said helps simplify service and lower owning and operating costs over the life of the machine. The system eliminates the bevel gear used in mechanical drive systems. The engine drives a generator that sends power through an inverter to two motors, delivering consistent power to the tracks.

The dedicated drive motor at each track provides power-turn capability, enabling smoother, sharper maneuvering and the ability to push more material through the turn. Accessible, low-effort electronic steering, ripper and dozer controls further support precise maneuvering. A suspended undercarriage absorbs impact and reduces shock load transfer to the undercarriage by up to 50%.
Features designed to improve durability and simplify serviceability include a new radiator guard and upgraded case and frame, larger lift cylinder trunnion bearings and redesigned pin joints with replaceable bearings. Up to 85% parts commonality with the D11 further supports serviceability.
The D11 XE’s engine has heavier-duty internal components and operates at a lower high-idle speed compared to the C32 in the D11, helping to deliver up to 20% longer life between rebuilds. The electric drive generator and motors are designed to last through two machine lives with only rebearing and resealing. A modular design allows major components to be removed independently, helping streamline service and minimize downtime.
Planned component repair intervals for the D11 XE engine, final drives and hydraulic systems have increased from 15,000 to 18,000 hours, aligning with the electric drive’s 18,000-hour rebuild centerline.
