Caterpillar Jumps Into UTV Market

Premium Content

28 November 2017

The utility vehicle (UTV) market gained another member when Caterpillar Inc. announced its first two machines — one gasoline-powered and one diesel — set to debut in the summer of 2018.

Caterpillar’s CUV82 and CUV102D are the company’s first foray into the market. It selected powertrain options that the company said are tried-and-true engines for the machines. The CUV102D is powered by a 25 hp, three-cylinder 1.0 L Kohler diesel engine and the CUV82 includes a 50 hp, three-cylinder 0.8 L Chery gasoline engine.

The CUV82 is designed to reach speeds of 45 mph and the CUV102D is built to reach speeds of 25 mph. Both machines are designed with a rugged steel cargo bed and offer 1000 lb. total rear cargo capacity and 2000 lb. towing capacity.

Other design characteristics of the UTV include: smooth acceleration, clear sightlines and engine braking capability that the company said is best suited for hauling and towing, an intuitive column shifter to allow for easy maneuverability through all the gears, and a continuously variable transmission tuned specifically for work applications. Operators can choose from two-wheel or four-wheel drive or four-wheel drive/lock modes to match drive to ground conditions.
