Cat’s Newest “Energy Container”

Premium Content

10 April 2019

Caterpillar Inc. has announced a new 20 ft.  (6 m) energy container for the Cat C32 standby diesel generator set that the company said reduces the onsite installation footprint for an enclosed power solution while minimizing packaging and shipping costs.

“Customers demand standby power solutions that meet their needs while minimizing owning and operating costs,” said Joel Feucht, general manager for Caterpillar’s Large Electric Power Division. “This first-to-market energy container illustrates how our engineers leverage our technology portfolio to develop unique, market-responsive solutions to help our customers be more successful.”

The energy container is targeted toward a range of standby applications such as urban environments, rooftop installations, data centers, healthcare facilities and other applications needing sound attenuation or protection from the elements. It incorporates a patent-pending, 4 ft.  (1.2 m) outlet extension that folds inside the reduced-size container for shipping and then unfolds onsite to serve as a vertical discharge chamber for facilitating airflow during operation.

This functionality allows customers to select the Cat C32 generator set as a standby solution that delivers up to 1500 kVA within what company said is the most compact enclosure for the power output.  Cat said the new design outperforms competing solutions that require customers to choose either a standby solution with reduced power output to meet space requirements or a power solution packaged in a larger 40 ft. (12 m) shipping container to achieve an equivalent power output.

With a noise rating of 85 dB(A) at 1 m and 100% load, the Cat C32 generator set and energy container are available now for customers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the CIS and the Asia-Pacific region.
