Rolls Touts Big Deals In China

Rolls-Royce Power Systems announced that six companies from across China’s shipping, rail, energy and construction industries signed contracts and letters of intent covering over 200 MTU engines of various types at the CIIE – the China International Import Export trade fair.

“Businesses across China are increasingly opting for MTU engines for deployment in key services and transport infrastructures. They decide in our favor because we build powerful, robust engines and strive to deliver the very best systems and solutions,” said Tobias Ostermaier, president of Rolls-Royce Power Systems in China.

The letter of intent signed by Afai Southern Shipyard, Fujian Cross Straits Ferry and Rolls-Royce enables RoPax high-speed ferries (for passengers and freight) to be developed and built in China for the first time, the company said. Supply by Rolls-Royce of four Series 8000 units – MTU’s largest engine – to Afai Southern Shipyard is planned to take place by 2020. The Series 8000 engines are to deliver some 50 000 HP in total to power the 112-m Hai Xia Hao catamaran.

Dongfang Electric International Corporation (DEC) and Rolls-Royce are entering into a long-term partnership that makes Rolls-Royce the Chinese company’s preferred engine supplier for its transport projects. This year, DEC already purchased 18 rail engines from MTU, to be used on Sri Lanka Railways in railcars built by CRRC, the world’s largest rolling stock manufacturer.

To safeguard the power supply to data centers and serve China’s telecommunications infrastructure, Rolls-Royce will also be delivering some 170 engines to the Chinese companies Shanghai Cooltech Power and Tellhow SCI-Tech. The related contracts and letters of intent were likewise signed at the CIIE trade show.

Construction company CGGC UN signed letters of intent for the purchase of 25 MTU engines and 10 diesel generator sets to be delivered in 2019 for use in data centers and on projects in countries overseas.
“Rolls-Royce is aiming to grow its business in China,” Ostermaier. “To succeed, it is essential for it to keep building local partnerships. Only then will it be able to supply its energy-efficient, reliable and eco-friendly drive systems to customers in the region.”
