Stadler unveils new KISS double-decker trains
26 June 2025
Stadler has unveiled its new KISS double-deck trains which are set to be introduced by the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways).
Operating as part of the Railjet service, the new KISS trains are electric multiple units (EMUs). With each train comprising six carriages, top speed will about 200 km/h.
Replacing the single-deck trains now in service, the new models will increase passenger seating by about 20% (486 seats per train set).
A total of 14 trains will enter service on the line between Vienna and Salzburg by the end of 2026. Other lines where the trains could enter service include the service to Graz.
“With the Railjet double-decker, we are presenting a completely new and special vehicle,” said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.
“At ÖBB, we have been using double-decker trains in local transport for many years and are setting another milestone in modern rail transport with the new double-decker long-distance train. From the end of 2026, the train will be on the western line, which will significantly increase capacity for our customers.”
The first KISS model was introduced by Stadler in 2008. Since then, the model range has grown to support multiple traction types that use electric, battery and hybrid power to support use on routes with or without overhead power lines.
