In February 2022, Takeuchi partnered with United Rentals to introduce the first 100 of the TB20e battery-powered compact excavator as part of a pilot program to gauge customer reaction and feedback.

Now, Takeuchi is making the excavator available for purchase and rental from qualified dealers throughout North America.

The TB20e – which has similar performance to Takeuchi’s diesel-powered TB216 – is powered by a 24.7 kWh, 73 V lithium-ion battery that provides a continuous working range from four to eight hours, depending on the application and environment.

When additional runtime is required, the excavator can be tethered to an onboard charger with 95 V to 265 V single-phase power, enabling the machine to remain operational.

An optional portable off-board charger supplies 480 V to 552 V three-phase power capable of charging the machine in just two to four hours. For safety, an emergency switch located on the seat riser prevents operation or charging when activated.

The compact TB20e has an operating weight of 4255 lbs., bucket capacity of 1.34 cu. ft., maximum dig depth of 7 ft. 10 in. and maximum reach of 13 ft. 4 in. A primary hydraulic circuit plumbed to midarm delivers 9.0 gpm for running hydraulically driven attachments. Load-sensing, two-speed travel shifts from low torque/high speed mode to high torque/low speed automatically when turning, pushing or traveling up an incline.

The operator cab includes a 4.3-in., high-definition, multifunction color monitor, electrohydraulic joystick controls, key start, high-back adjustable suspension seat, traditional travel and blade control levers and an electronic dial throttle to increase motor speed incrementally. Takeuchi Fleet Management (TFM) telematics comes standard.

According to the company, the rugged unit features the same all-steel construction and heavy-duty design as other Takeuchi excavators. It is equipped with a long arm and thumb bracket as well as a hydraulically retractable undercarriage for work in areas with limited access.

The TB20e will be on display at the ARA Show in Orlando, Fla., February 11-15, and at ConExpo in Las Vegas, March 14-18.
