Wärtsilä to deliver 15 gen set engines for new US data center

Wärtsilä is to supply generator sets outputting a total of 282 MW for a new data center project in Ohio.
The onsite power facility will feature 15 units of the Wärtsilä 18V50SG engine running on natural gas. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q2 2025.
The 50SG range is a four-stroke spark-ignition gas-fuel engine. The company states that the engine’s high efficiency and small footprint makes it ‘ideal for flexible baseload and balancing applications’.
“Data center developers are facing increasing time-to-power challenges due to grid connection delays. Wärtsilä’s short lead time for engine manufacturing provides data center customers with faster power solutions than others,” said Risto Paldanius, vice president, Americas, at Wärtsilä Energy.
In addition to delivering a consistent and reliable power supply, Wärtsilä’s technology uses very little water. Low water consumption is crucial for data centers to minimize environmental impact, reduce operational costs and enhance resilience against water scarcity.
Data centers are the backbone of today’s digital economy. However, they face significant challenges when planning power delivery, largely due to limitations of the grid.
The Wärtsilä equipment will be delivered in phases, starting in late 2026 and continuing into 2027. With this project, Wärtsilä will exceed 6,000 MW of total delivered capacity in the United States
