Rolls-Royce Power Systems is to deliver engines for a series of three new offshore supply vessels (OSVs).

Each of the craft will feature four mtu Series 2000M72 16-cylinder engines. Combined they will be able to deliver a maximum speed of more than 53 knots, reportedly making them the fastest vessels of their kind in the world.

Each engine produces up to 5,760 kW of power.

Built by Singapore shipbuilder Strategic Marine, the OSVs will be used by a national oil company in Africa for passenger transfer to offshore platforms and floating production, storage and off-loading vessels.

To enable the high speeds, the 35-metre OSVs will use Surface Effect Ships technology. In combination with a catamaran hull design, SES uses an air-cushion system to help reduce drag and water resistance.

Despite the high speed capability, the SES design means that fuel consumption will remain the same per operational hour, while also reducing related emissions.

“We are extremely proud that our mtu propulsion package has helped to develop this new and extraordinary type of vessel,” said Denise Kurtulus, senior VP, Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“The excellent power-to-weight ratio and long maintenance intervals of over 12,000 hours were crucial factors in the selection of our engines. These product benefits will help us achieve our strategic goal of increasing our share of the commercial marine market.”
