Cat Launches New Marine Engine

27 August 2020

Caterpillar Marine has launched the C32B high performance 2000 hp marine engine with a rated engine speed of 2300 rpm.

The company said the new engine meets emerging market demands, including in the sport fishing segment, and expands the power capability of the C32 high performance product line, delivering a 5% power increase over existing C32 ratings with only a 2% weight increase. It retains the same package design as the C32 line, so it can be used for repowers as well as newbuilds, the company said.

The new engine is also 25% quieter under low-speed conditions thanks to the c32B’s advanced unit injection fuel system. Like common rail fuel systems used on other high-horsepower engines, it fires multiple injections of fuel per power stroke, thereby reducing noise, the company said.

The engine has a bore and stroke of 145 X 162 mm and meets EPA Tier 3 Recreational, IMO 2 and EU IW emissions regulations. It is 2106 mm long, 1445 mm high and 1482 mm wide and weighs 3075 kg.

Customers familiar with the current C32 engine can expect a similar look with the new model, as well as most of the same connection points and footprint. Beyond power density improvement, additional benefits include updated electronics (ADEM 6 ECM) and an enhanced unit injector fuel system, enabling multiple injections to help improve noise and vibration characteristics from combustion.

“We’re very excited to offer our customers more power with the C32B engine, while also helping to reduce engine noise and continuing to provide excellent engine performance and reliability,” says Allen Bowman, marine product strategy engineer for Caterpillar Marine. “The C32B will provide expanded opportunities for our customers for new builds and repower options, which is generating excitement about the future of the C32B and what it will bring to the market.”

The Cat C32B marine engine will be available for order in fall of 2020.
