Cummins has unveiled its new S29 mining engine at the Chongqing Cummins Engine Plant in Chongqing, China.
The S29 is a 29-liter V12 engine which can produce 969 kW (1,300 hp) at 2,100 rpm and 6,000 Nm (4,425 ft lb) of torque.
The new ‘clean sheet’ engine is intended for use in haul trucks between 90 and 120 tons and excavators in the range of 150 and 220 tons. Other applications could include dozers, large wheel loaders and pump systems.
“Today, we’re not just introducing a new engine — we’re setting a new benchmark for mining power,” said Jenny Bush, Cummins’ vice president and president, Power Systems.
She continued: “The Cummins S29 brings together innovations in fuel economy, reliability and power density to deliver exceptional performance, exceptional total cost of ownership and the flexibility to adapt as mining operations evolve.”
The new S29 is said to over power density in a compact package, with efficiency which will help deliver improved total cost of ownership.
A high-pressure fuel injection system operates at up to 1,800 bar to help improve combustion. The model is compliant with China Stage 3 and EPA Tier 2-equivalent emissions standards.
Key features of the new engine include the single-stage HE550 turbo which can deliver full power at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters without derating. Maximum operational altitude is 5,000 meters.
A dual pump, dual loop water pump system allows ‘optimal’ air handling and thermal control for stable engine performance.
An oil filtration system with three spin-on filters ensures delivery of clean oil to protect engine components. The integrated pre-lube pump circulates oil before starting to reduce wear.
The S29 will be capable of using diesel, HVO and biodiesel up to B50. As with other HELM engine platforms from Cummins there are plans to introduce versions which pair a similar engine block with new valve heads to support use of natural gas, hydrogen or dual fuel setups.
The S29 will be on show at Bauma China in Shanghai (November 23 – 27). Production is expected to start towards the end of 2027.
