Hyzon issues WARN notice in advance of likely dissolution

Hyzon, an OEM which has focused on development and production of Class 8 and refuse collection trucks fitted with hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, has issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) to its employees in Bolingbrook, Illinois and Troy, Michigan.

The notice, issued on December 20, 2024, begins the 60-day notice period that must be given prior to idling operations and laying off employees under the WARN Act.

On that same day, it was reported that the Hyzon board of directors voted to dissolve the company, subject to shareholder approval.

The move will effectively start the winding down process and dissolution of Hyzon as a going concern.

In a related statement on its website, Hyzon cited the inability to raise funding as the primary reason for the dissolution.

The message also pointed to uncertainty related to the availability of government subsidies, including the California Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project.

The company believes that this has ‘caused certain of its customers to slow down or suspend their purchasing decisions’.

If the company cannot raise funds or find a buyer, it is expected that the ‘reduction in force’ will be completed in February 2025.

In June 2022, Power Progress reported that Hyzon Motors had received zero-emissions certification from CARB. The company went on to deliver a limited number of vehicles to customers, while continuing to carry out tests of its fuel cell tech.

As late as November 2024, the company reported completing tests of a fuel cell-powered refuse truck in California.
