Material handling machine manufacturer Hyster has delivered an RSJ46-33XDH/62 ReachStacker to Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST).
Featuring a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, the new addition will play a key role in a five-year test to determine the viability of hydrogen to decarbonize port logistics.
The ReachStacker uses a 60 kW fuel cell from Nuvera. This converts H2 into electricity for recharging of the 130 kWh battery packs which power onboard motors.
Despite the different powertrain type, the machine uses standard software architecture to provide a common operator experience.
The test will be supported by a modular hydrogen refuelling station.
The Hyster RSJ46-33XDH/62 ReachStacker will support operations at what is described as Europe’s largest dedicated shortsea shipping hub, primarily handling 45-foot containers, including open-top containers.
“For us, sustainability is not just an ambition for the future; it is about the choices we make today,” said Arno Storm, CEO, RST.
“This hydrogen refuelling station and hydrogen fuel cell-powered ReachStacker allow us to explore the transition in practice. We want to play our part, learn along the way and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the generations to come.”
