John Deere issues guidance on diesel fuel waiver

Operator guidance issued following EPA emergency diesel fuel waiver in Texas

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) is advising customers to review their specific engine fuel requirements following a temporary emergency fuel waiver issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Texas on October 5, 2026.

The EPA fuel waiver temporarily lifts federal ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) requirements in Texas to alleviate ongoing fuel supply disruptions. The waiver is effective through October 24, 2026, and could be extended by the EPA. While the waiver permits the distribution of diesel with higher sulfur content, engine requirements vary significantly based on equipment design, emission tiers and power ratings.

John Deere-powered equipment owners should adhere to the following fuel guidelines based on engine tier levels:

  • Tier 4 and Interim Tier 4 Engines: ULSD containing 15 parts per million (ppm) sulfur or lower is required to maintain exhaust aftertreatment systems.
  • Lower-Tier Engines: Lower-tier solutions (such as Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3, and legacy engines) permit higher sulfur fuel levels as defined in the equipment’s specific owner’s manual. Use of 500 ppm sulfur in these applications is permitted.

Operating Final Tier 4 or Interim Tier 4 engines on fuel exceeding the recommended 15 ppm limit presents operational risks. While higher sulfur levels will not necessarily cause immediate component failure, sustained exposure to non-compliant fuel can lead to system degradation and shorten the operational lifespan of aftertreatment systems, including Selective Catalytic Reduction systems requiring Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Diesel Particulate Filters.

John Deere reminds equipment owners that fuel specifications are established to protect engine health and performance. Introducing fuel that does not meet the standards specified in the equipment owner’s manual could impact warranty coverage for affected engine components.

To ensure equipment protection and compliance during the temporary waiver period, John Deere recommends:

  1. Consult Fuel Providers: Operators should check directly with their fuel provider to verify that fuel meets the specific ppm sulfur requirements of their engine.
  2. Review Owner’s Manuals: Always check the equipment owner manual for approved fuel types, filtration standards, and required maintenance intervals.
  3. Maintain Filtration Standards: Ensure replacement fuel filters meet John Deere performance standards to protect fuel system components.

John Deere will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated guidance to customers as appropriate.

For additional guidance or questions regarding specific engine requirements, operators should contact their local authorized John Deere distributor or dealer.
