MAN Engines shows battery solutions at EnergyDecentral

Known for its stationary engines for power and heat generation, MAN Engines is presenting its latest developments for electricity storage in the industry sector for the first time at EnergyDecentral, taking place Nov. 12 to 15 in Hannover, Germany. The main focus in the stand will be its BatteryPack targeted to mobile applications.

The BatteryPack is based on nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries and is characterized by its focus on cell chemistry, charging cycles, mechanical robustness, vibration resistance and service life, the company stated. It can store 89 kWh of energy, of which 80 kWh can be used.

“We see MAN BatteryPacks in mobile charging solutions that are exposed to high loads and at the same time have to meet a variety of different operating conditions, said Reiner Roessner, head of Sales, MAN Engines. “Compared to other cell chemistries, NMC cell chemistry offers a high energy density, which is very crucial for mobile applications.”

Each BatteryPack generally consists of several battery modules arranged in two to four layers within the housing. This modular design allows them to be flexibly and individually scaled to the capacity and performance of energy storage systems for different energy requirements, said Roessner. Three configuration alternatives (from square to elongated) enable a range of integration options in different installation spaces.

Currently, up to six BatteryPacks can be combined to achieve a total system capacity of up to 534 kWh gross (480 kWh net), with plans to expand to other packs for higher capacities.

Also on display at EnergyDecentral is the MAN E3268 V8 gas engine with updated cylinder head for increased robustness; and the 30 L MAN E3872, a four-stroke, V12 gasoline engine rated at 735 kWmech at 1,500 rpm/840 kWmech at 1,800 rpm and available in 50- and 60-Hz variants.
