ReVolt Motors is to unveil a Peterbilt 379 Class 8 truck retrofitted with the company’s series hybrid powertrain at the upcoming Mid-America Trucking show, to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, 27-29 March.

A series hybrid powertrain combines a diesel internal combustion engine and battery packs. The engine does not drive the wheels and instead acts as generator delivering electrical charge to the batteries, which in turn power onboard electric motors.

“Drivers should not have to choose between losing their longtime routes because of changing regulatory environments or losing the truck in which they have already made significant investments,” said Gus Gardner, founder and CEO.

“American truckers want their trucks to reflect their identity, and our retrofit technology allows them to continue driving the trucks they love while still making a living.”

According to details released by ReVolt, the powertrain delivers up to 670 hp and 3,500 lb ft (4,745 Nm) of torque.

Additionally, the drivetrain eliminates the need for an auxiliary power unit needed to power and heat the sleep cab.

According to ReVolt, the series hybrid retrofit is a ‘significantly more affordable option’ than purchasing a new battery-electric truck, which it states can cost more than $500,000.

It is put forward that the truck can achieve around 12 miles per gallon which helps to cut fuel costs by about 40%. Operating the truck on battery power also helps to reduce emissions by 40%.

The range extender powertrain also incorporates regenerative braking to deliver additional top up power to the battery packs. And the series powertrain means that there’s no waiting for the battery packs to recharge at a fixed point.
