South America is set to see the introduction of the continent’s first hydrogen fuel cell locomotive.

Operated by Ferrocarril de Antofagasta (FCAB), the loco will begin operations between Chile and Bolivia on the Antofagasta-Bolivia rail network.

The model was developed and built in China by CRRC Qishuyan earlier in 2024 – the company is involved in development of various rail technologies, including some used on the country’s high-speed rail network.

The 1,000 kW fuel cell uses a 35 MPa hydrogen storage system paired with high-capacity batteries. FCAB stated that the loco is approximately 30 tonnes lighter than other hydrogen-powered models.

“This milestone is a major step forward in terms of innovation, which is the hallmark of Antofagasta and FCAB. It will allow us to learn about this new fuel, which only emits water vapour and hot air, unlike diesel. We want to explore other possible uses of this fuel in the future, when the technology is more mature,” explained Iván Arriagada, CEO of Antofagasta.

Launch of the new locomotive is part of the company’s plan to replace diesel-fuelled equipment and reduce its carbon footprint. In 2023, Antofagasta unveiled Chilean mining’s largest fleet of electric pickup trucks at its Centinela mine.

It is understood that FCAB has secured access to a supply of green hydrogen to fuel the new locomotive. Construction of related support facilities is now underway, while staff undergo related training.
