A truck fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell from Accelera by Cummins has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled by a truck with this type of powertrain.

The zero-emission H2Rescue truck, a Class 7 Kenworth T370 prototype designed for emergency response missions, completed a 1,806-mile journey using only the onboard hydrogen fuel.

The accomplishment is said to show the potential for hydrogen technology in zero-emission transportation and portable power.

Fitted with an Accelera fuel cell and a 250 kW traction motor, the truck carried 175 kg of H2 fuel. Over the journey, which was closely monitored by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records, the truck used 168 kg of fuel while travelling at between 50 and 55 mph.

Temperatures across the route varied between 60 and 80ºF (15 and 27ºC), while the truck negotiated a mix of road conditions, including rush hour traffic.

The truck emitted zero carbon over the journey; a diesel equivalent would have emitted 664 lb. It is reported that a fuel cell-powered truck like this would save the use of 1,825 gallons (8,300 liters) of diesel each year and cut greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 2.5 metric tonnes.

The H2Rescue truck was developed by a partnership involving Accelera, the US Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate, the US Department of Energy and US Department of Defense.

The truck is intended to support disaster relief efforts. It can power between 20 and 25 FEMA (Federal Emergency Management) trailers, support shelters or homes for up to 72 hours without refuelling.
