Following the formation of the partnership between HD Hyundai Marine Solutions and Accelleron, the companies have signed an agreement with Greek operator Neptune Lines Shipping and Managing Enterprises to provide engine part load optimisation (EPLO) for four car carrier vessels.

Most marine engines are designed to provide optimal fuel efficiency/performance at a specific speed and in the operating environment. But more than 60% of ships of 400 gross tons and above are required by the International Maritime Organization to comply with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index and Carbon Intensity Indicator with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This results in some shipping companies instituting engine power output limits of up to 70%, which directly impacts overall vessel speed.

EPLO can increase combustion efficiency by matching the turbocharger to the new load requirements, while adjusting other factors, such as fuel injection timings and the fuel/air ratio. These changes are said to improve fuel efficiency by up to six grams per kWh, with an equivalent reduction in carbon emissions.

Matthias Reichmann, Global Production manager (Upgrades) at turbocharging specialist Accelleron, said: “With EPLO, Accelleron is assisting the maritime industry to not only boost the competitiveness of their vessels, but also achieve profitable navigation towards their mid-term decarbonisation goals.”
