Volvo Penta has released details of two new additions to its marine propulsion range.

The first is the D6 480 DPI, a new addition to the Aquamatic DPI range. It features a 5.5-litre six-cylinder diesel engine that uses common rail injection technology. Peak power output stands at 480 hp.

Intended for both commercial and leisure applications, the D6 480 DPI is designed for single, twin, triple or quadruple installations, making it a fully scalable solution.

“With the D6 480 DPI we’re further strengthening our Aquamatic DPI range by offering a complete, integrated package that delivers outstanding comfort, performance and onboard flexibility – perfect for modern boat owners and commercial marine operators looking for an upgrade, in every sense of the word,” said Ludvig Börjesson, product planner at Volvo Penta.

Using a stern drive the new powertrain provides an open transom, which allows improved access to the water. Volvo Penta’s Duoprop technology delivers acceleration and control, while a hydraulic clutch supports quiet shifts and smoother low-speed operation.

Volvo Penta has also released its next-generation Autopilot system. Integrated with the Electronic Vessel Control system, the package is said to deliver an enhanced boating experience.

Key features of the new system include a GPS compass which provides greater heading precision. In addition, a built-in brake function for the steering wheel and joystick delivers haptic feedback on steering and course.

These upgrades are said to have a ‘positive effect’ on other navigational equipment, supporting an improved and more reliable radar overlay.

Volvo Penta Autopilot is available with all IPS, Aquamatic and twin inboard propulsion packages using electric steering.
