Mercedes-Benz Trucks adds next-gen steering system

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has introduced the new Servotwin system, the next generation of its steering system with torque overlay. The system is used in vehicles with high front axle loads.

Like its predecessor, the Servotwin system is based on a dual circuit steering setup with separate hydraulic and electric power supplies. It is designed to combine the steering torque applied by the driver with an electronically controlled supplementary steering torque – which the company said allows for maximum steering precision, especially at higher speeds, and finely adjustable control.

An active steering wheel return automatically brings the wheel back to the center position after cornering for increased driver comfort, particularly in urban and distribution operations.

Via the driver instrument, the driver can choose between three modes, which differ in steering assistance and active return behavior at speeds below 30 km/h. This allows the steering characteristics to be customized to individual preferences, Mercedes-Benz noted.

Straight-line stability has also been optimized. At higher speeds, the vehicle remains more stable in its lane and is less sensitive to ruts.

The combination of hydraulic power assistance and an integrated electric motor allows the vehicle to be steered with minimal effort even at low speeds or while stationary.

According to the company, the play-free center position of the steering system ensures a direct and controlled steering feel. The control unit automatically adjusts the level of steering assistance to the driving situation for enhanced steering behavior at both low and high speeds.
