Advanced Refining Concepts launches two diesel formulations for specialized applications
17 January 2025
Advanced Refining Concepts, LLC (ARC) has introduced two new diesel fuel formulations, GDiesel Lightning and GDiesel Thunder, tailored for specific engine applications. The announcement follows four years of research, development and testing.

GDiesel Lightning is engineered for urban environments with frequent start-stop operations, such as city buses, delivery vehicles, passenger cars and light trucks, ARC said. Its lighter composition promotes quicker ignition, improving responsiveness and efficiency while reducing visible smoke and emissions by more than 35 percent. It also excels in cold weather operations, the company said, delivering superior performance without requiring additives.
GDiesel Thunder, a heavier fuel with higher energy content, is designed for more continuous engine operation in sectors such as on-highway transportation, agriculture, stationary power, rail and marine. This formulation enhances efficiency by 5 to 10 percent, reduces emissions and minimizes engine wear, ARC said.
The company added that both fuels meet current diesel regulatory standards, allowing for seamless adoption without modifications to engines, fueling infrastructure or warranties. ARC anticipates the fuels will be distributed through its licensees and future partners with established distribution networks.
“Engine manufacturers are at their limits trying to improve efficiency and emissions from standard diesel,” said Peter Gunnerman, managing partner for ARC. “It is long past due time to redesign the fuel side. It has never made sense to assume that one diesel fuel option can be efficient for all diesel engine types and operating cycles.”
According to ARC, the refining technology that makes GDiesel Lightning and GDiesel Thunder possible has also been successfully applied to renewable diesel. Both petroleum and bio-based versions of the fuels can be used as next-generation blend stocks or to enhance biodiesel blend ratios and efficiency across diverse climates.
