Hong Kong shipyard places new order for MAN engines
17 February 2025
MAN Energy Solutions announced that Cheoy Lee Shipyards in Hong Kong has placed an order for eight 12V175D-MM marine propulsion engines for four newbuild tugs. Each shipset consists of 2 × 2,400 kW rated 12-cylinder engines and will provide propulsion power for four 2900 TRAnsverse tugs for Svitzer, a global towage and marine services provider headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The TRAnsverse tugs will have an overall length of 29 meters, deliver bollard pulls of up to 80 tonnes and come with enhanced side pushing capabilities. With a top speed of 13 knots, and 8 knots side-stepping, the omni-directional hull form and propulsion provides for higher steering and breaking forces than similar sized ASD tugs, with lower fuel consumption, thanks in part to the fuel-efficient 12V175D-MM engines.
The eco-friendly 12V175D-MM is compliant with the latest exhaust gas emission standards. It is also designed for future fuel requirements and is already cleared for operation on biofuels, such as FAME and HVO.
Florian Keiler, head of High Speed, MAN Energy Solutions, said the engine order “showcases the benefits of having powerful 12-cylinder propulsion engines for harbor tug applications.” He went on to state that the MAN 175D is suited to such applications where “its compactness, performance and operational cost benefits” are seen as key features.
The engines will be produced in Frederikshavn, Denmark, with first deliveries to Cheoy Lee Shipyards planned for third quarter 2025. Svitzer expects to take delivery of these four 29-m tugs by the end of 2026 and has options for four more if it secures new marine service contracts.
Once handed over, the tugs will be integrated into service as part of Svitzer’s global fleet. While planned as fleet replacements globally, the new vessels can also be deployed in new growth projects.
