Volvo CE reveals all-new articulated hauler line
28 January 2025
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) launched today a new line of seven articulated haulers (A25 to A60), ranging in size from 28 to 61 tons. The new generation models represent a complete overhaul of the company’s articulated dump truck (ADT) line.
A highlight is the all-new A50 model, a new size class of articulated dump truck designed to provide 10% more productivity and 8% greater fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation’s A45G FS.
“The A50 is a 50-ton U.S. payload. The previous model was a 45-ton capacity truck, so we’ve increased the capacity by 5 U.S. short tons,” noted Tyler Smith, articulated hauler product manager, Volvo CE. “We’ve increased the capability of the truck with the suspension. We’ve reinforced the axles and we’re offering a new Volvo transmission.”
The new transmission “completely redesigned with improved internals” will be available on the A45 and A50 models, Smith added.
Weighing 74,075 lbs. (net)/33,600 kg, the A50 has a body capacity of 36.4 cu. yds. (heaped)/27.8 cu. meters. It is powered by a Volvo D16J diesel engine with max gross power of 516 hp/385 kW at 1,900 rpm and with 2,028 lb.-ft./2,750 Nm gross torque at 1,100 to 1,300 rpm.
The A50’s full-suspension technology allows for faster travel speed and a smoother ride over rough terrain in quarries, mines and large construction sites. It is capable of a maximum speed of 35.4 mph/57 kph.
Rugged capability plus sustainability
Models in the lineup incorporate multiple new features, including a new electronic system and new in-house developed transmission that the company said delivers up to 15% fuel efficiency improvement over their predecessors, depending on the model and application.
The Volvo drivetrain with Terrain Memory has the capability to identify and remember slippery road segments. Automatic drive, 100% differential locks and all-terrain bogie and hydro-mechanical steering work together to provide traction, stability and precise control, the company stated.
Volvo Dynamic Drive offers predictive gear selection that adapts to operating conditions, and a downhill speed control function relies on the company’s braking systems to further enhance efficiency, safety and comfort.
The frame and body design provide enhanced tipping clearance and material flow when dumping, while improvements such as an optional overhung tailgate with longer arms allows for a quicker and wider opening when dumping.
Volvo CE pointed out that its new line is also being built with a focus on sustainability. This includes the introduction of low carbon emission steel – made from recycled materials and produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas – in serial production of haulers manufactured at the Volvo CE Global Braås, Sweden site.
Designed for productivity and comfort
Visibility and safety are enhanced on the new generation models with upgrades like a wider field of vision, a tailgate with longer arms (to open wider and faster) and various improvements inside the cab.
The fully redesigned cab has a repositioned door, railings on both sides and focused lighting on the stairs and platform for easier entry and exit. Inside the cab, it includes a larger floor area, new hanging pedals and steering wheel, a heated or cooled storage box for food and drink, an adjustable seat, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports for charging devices, ergonomic levers and switch layouts and better noise reduction.
The updated interactive Volvo Co-Pilot display offers easy control of functions such as media, camera settings, climate control and machine status. A dynamic instrument cluster positioned in front of the steering wheel provides important vehicle data at a glance.
Technology such as Haul Assist with onboard weighing provides real-time payload data. Traffic flow, vehicle performance and on-site logistics can be improved with the use of digital tools such as Connected Map, Performance Indicator and Site Optimization. The ActiveCare Direct telematics system supports machine uptime and reduces repair costs.
A lower hood profile, reconfigured and larger window panels, additional LED lighting and wider windshield wiper coverage result in an enhanced field of vision. Optional front and rear cameras and a standard entrance camera — all managed via the Volvo Co-Pilot — further enhance visibility.
A startup button is now found at ground level, illuminating the stairs and booting up controls. Once in the cab, the operator turns the key to fully start the machine. At the end of the day, the switch does not need to be turned off — the key alone takes care of shutdown.
Maintenance costs are reduced by up to 6% over 12,000 hours of operation due to simplified servicing and longer change intervals. A new access ladder is hidden under the hood, and the hood can be raised or lowered with the push of a button. The entire engine compartment is illuminated, and the condenser package has moved to the right side of the cab. Greasing intervals of 250 hours eliminate the need for daily or weekly greasing.
Availability
Models in the new lineup will be introduced in steps to global markets throughout 2025.
For North America, the A35, A40, A45 and A50 – with max power ratings from 451-516 hp/336-385 kW and capacities from 27.8 to 36.4 cu. yds./21.3-27.8 cu. meters – will be available for order starting in Q1, with the remaining models launching later in 2025.
